1996 Johnson 35Jet isue

New to Forum...Have a Johnson J50JEDS, started having start issues, would start then stop. Replaced plugs, rebuilt carbs, new hose & bulb. Runs better, but wouldn't idle. Saw where ppl adjust the screw for spark advance, so I did. Didn't seem to make a difference. I was reading where one should not adjust that screw, is that true?

If it was the screw for maximum spark advance you made a mistake.---Did it have a black rubber bumper ??------Good trouble shooting beats guess work every time,.----Do a compression test first !

Yes, black rubber bumper w/lock nut ....0328699 - Screw. Should I have shop set timing, or can I get it back where it was ?

If timing is now too far advanced you risk damage to the motor.----Guess work on outboard motors is risky.----Best to post your compression values.
