1996 Johnson 175 2500 RPM max when hot

" Have ran multiple trips offs

" Have ran multiple trips offshore, motor runs great til late in the day, when returning home, engine acts like it has bad gas spits and sputters past 2500 RPM. Replaced the water pump this season pee hole shows good flow. Temp gauge shows 160 degrees to 170 when problem occurs. After motor cools downs below 160 runs fine til she heats up again. Tried disconnecting black/ywellow wire last trip to rule out shift interrupt switch, no change. Have read in repair manual about "SLOW" function built into tempature harness checked the blocking doides cold they read 1.5M ohm and infinity. Didnt get to check them while hot though. any ideas how to troubleshoot this further. "

" Sounds like you have bad sensor,if the temperature is what you say, sending the motor into S.L.O.W. On the each head you have a temperature sensor. When the motor goes into S.L.O.W. mode, stop the motor and disconnect the tan lead off one sensor,then restart the motor. Shutting off the motor resets the S.L.O.W. mode. Run the motor up to speed , and see what happens. If it still goes into S.L.O.W. try the other sensor. By the way does your warning horn come on? "

Marci is on the money but if that fails I would also check the stator. A stator that is going bad can cause problems as it gets hot.

Thanks for all the info. I will try these ideas next time I head out. The warning horn does not sound except when intially starting.
