" I have a 1996 Johnson V4 2-Stroke. I've been running it in Hawaii for the past 3 years and even though it "coughs" once in a while; it has never let me down. I am now selling the boat and the perspective buyer does not like the intermitten miss. Also depending on the current and chop we sometimes can't get over 3000 RPM and after we change heading, we can get it to spike up to 5500 and above and the boat flies. This does not have the original prop so I am not sure if that is a factor in the RPM but I feel that the missing problem is either "normal" or is coming from a bad coil and / or wire. The fuel filters have been replaced with no difference. Compression is good with 125 being the average. Any ideas... Thanks... Gene "

"Gene.... If that cough is more like a mild backfire, that is usually caused by a fouled carburetor. In which case, the cure is to remove, clean, and rebuild all the carburetors.

Joe... Thanks for the reply.

Joe... Thanks for the reply. I am going to start by replacing all 4 colis and low / high voltage leads with new plugs (of course). My next attack will be to have someone sync (and possibly disassemble and rebuild...ouch). And we should have a good running machine. Thanks & Aloha...
