1996 Evinrude RPM Issue

I have a 60 hp Evinrude that will not rev higher then 3800 rpm. It starts and idles fine. I start giving it the throttle and it runs smooth to 3800 then starts breaking up and shaking, the more throttle I give it the more it breaks up and shakes. I gave it the choke while running and it started to kill the motor. I kept pumping the ball with no change. It runs very smoth below 3800.
Any ideas??

Check compression !!--------Check to see if you have spark at each cylinder that will jump a gap of 7/16" or more.

Thanks for the responce.
Already did both the compression is 130 on all three cyl and the gap was tested with a 7/16 tester and all tested good.

Ya i forgot to put that in the first post. Sorry! I have been reading alot on this i have been trying to figure it out for some time now. Not sure which way to go now ignition or fuel?

Anybody have any ideas. The motor acks like it is hitting the rev limiter but at 3800-4000 rpm.
All cyl. are effected. I changed the power pak and the timing base. No luck!
The boat is 16' open CC and the prop is 13.25x15. Does not sound like it is over reving.
This happens at 2/3rds trottle.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I would check the control linkage to the carbs. Sounds like the flies went pass WOT and shutting down. Or possibly clogged jets that cause fuel starvation at high rpm if not an overheating issue.

qhn thanks for the responce!
I took an inductive timing light out on the river and verified that all three coil paks are miss firing at and above the 4000rpm mark.
I still have 1/3rd throttle at the carbs as checked with the hood off. It is almost like a rev-limiter but the rpm's are only at 4000.
RPM's at idle are 800+- after warm up. As I stated already changed out the power-pak and timing base. The only differance is when I changed out the power-pak the miss was more pronounced then with the older OEM unit.
Is there anything that is telling you to go with a new voltage regulator or stator?
I am really stumped on this thing.

Hi,
If you already have checked the timing and known that the cause for stumbling over 4000rpm is misfiring, then you have an intermittent powerpak again. From my experience, the bad voltage regulator will damage the powerpak quickly. 4 months back, I've just come across a '98 225hp Evinrude with this same problem. It only lost spark on 1 cylinder at 3500+rpm. I replaced the powerpak and voltage regulator and brought sparks back on all cylinders. Of course, I had ran a few diagnostics before replacing the parts; including testing the coils, etc...

When you push the control all the way down you should get WOT (wide open throttle) and not 1/3rd fly open.

Do it yourself you will need a repair manual and go thru it to get familar with suggested diagnostic steps describe in the book.

Good luck.

Anybody have any ideas. This is not a fuel problem. I brought an inductive timing light out on the river with me and checked what was happening with the coil paks. Once we got to 4000rpm the motor started missing on all cyl's as if you turned the key off and turned it back on the entire time the rpms stay above 4000. Today I changed the flywheel with no change in performance. Could this be a wiring issue. Remember I hard wired a red plug into the motor. Is there something that needs to be connected from the newer type harness to the old style.

Anyone please help!

Thanks!

Does anyone know the wires that need to be connected from the new style plugs to the old style red plug?
I have the gray, purple, yellow/red, black, and red.

Put and new prop on 13x19. Problem solved! Apparently there is a secondary rev limiter that comes into play when you have higher rpm and not enough load.
I can't belive that no one with outboard experiance could tell me this. I went to two local mechanics on Friday and all they could tell me was things I had already done. Neither of them were interested in looking at the motor. I talked to a mechanic on just answers and he had no idea. WOW what do these people do change parts for a living?
