1996 Evinrude 88 HP will not kill

I just aquired a used boat with a pristine '96 model 88 hp Evinrude. Owner stated that the ignition switch did not kill the motor when turned to the off position and if you pushed the choke button it would kill in about 5 seconds.

I replaced the ignition switch and not only will it not kill when in the off position, I can't kill it with the choke.

Here's my diaganostic testing so far.

Grounding the single black/yellow wire in the pull apart rubber plug leading (IN) to the power pack kills the motor. Power pack is good. Reconnect rubber plug and do the same with the (OUT) side of the plastic multi wire plug that is mounted in the plastic box on the side of the engine and when grounded there it killls the engine.

I checked the ground terminal and the kill terminals on the ignition switch when turned off and I have a connection.

Back at the plastic plug on the engine. Testing the plug that is on the wires leading back to the ignition switch. It's labeled 1,2,3,4,5,6. The wire on 3 is black with a white stripe and 4 is a purple wire. If I connect to the negative terminal lead for the control box and touch #3 and #4 with my meter probs I get the beep for a connection. The black with yellow wire (#1) on the plastic plug gets nothing. The ignition switch is in the OFF position.

What's next? I'm at a dead end.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this issue.

you either have a broken wire or the sylnoid is stuck closed on the ignition side, when the key is off test the wire on the sylnoid labeled IG if you have fire then its sylnoid

Figured it out in about an hour. Ended up being a bad connection in the large red rubber plug in the engine cover. Just crimped the female connector down a bit and it's worked great sense.
