1996 Evinrude 175 Engine kicks up when put it in reverse

Problem: When backing off the trailer in hard reverse the engine has started to "kick up" - like if trimmed all the way up then drops right back down hard - is this a hydraulic pump problem? 1996 Evinrude 175 HP Ocean Pro.

Sounds like it's in the T/T unit. Question would be, how "hard" in reverse ??

Pics of your unit? I might have one.
Does the motor drift down when tilted up?
Possible it's the hydraulic pump. Or the seals that ride n the shafts.
Best bet is rebuild the unit or get a whole T/T and swap it.
Unfortunately they ain't cheap. E-bay the prices are about $300
People want to get rich from something they are gonna throw away one day.
Try to reseal the unit.

You could also try a new manual release valve.
