1996 EVENRUDE 20HP HELP NEEDED

You have a 1997 20HP

As Scott said, have you tried adjusting the idle speed? The low speed needle is #15 in the Carburetor Parts Diagram. Your issue sounds like you may have a dirty passage in the carb. Your first, easy step is to first determine your needle position. Screw the needle in, counting the # of turns, until it is lightly seated. Next, completely remove the needle and inspect it to make sure the taper is smooth and there are no grooves. If that looks good, spray some carb cleaner into the threaded hole, lightly blow it with air, then reinstall the needle by threading it all the way in then back it out the number of turns you counted in the first step.

If that does not help the issue, try running the engine and turn the needle out 1/8th turn and see if it gets better. If not, go another 1/8th. If there is no improvement or the problem gets worse go back to the original position and turn IN at 1/8th increments and see if you can correct the problem.

If none of the needle adjustments or quick cleaning solves the problem then you might need to rebuild the carb. Do no just buy some cheap carb and throw on your engine. Purchase an OEM Carb Rebuild Kit and just clean and rebuild the one you have.

thank you very much, also does that motor have a fuel filter, iv looked up the model number but it never shows anything

on the carb idel screw is there not a factory mark on the factory spot where it should be that would make sence? also im going to try and rebuild the carb for the first time hope all goes well, lol im using these 2 vids.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ve7x9aViBY&t=373s

Count the # of turns to tight before you remove the screw.
is the idel screw the same as the fuel/air mixture screw. Also from what i see there are 3 different carbs for that motor? the carb should have a number on it telling me the correct carb correct?

Same block with different carburetor part # for each HP version.-----Post a picture of yours.-----Should be similar to the 15 HP carburetor I think.

In most instances, 2 turns out from lightly seated is a good starting point for the idle mixture screw. Any adjustments from there must be done with the lower unit submerged in water on a warm engine.

i took some pics of the carb on my 20 evenrude im looking at rebuilding the carb so i can order the correct carb kit, im in canada if someone can help
mod number E20CREUM

i searched it and saw this On Johnson and Evinrude outboards, parts are tracked by the overall engine model number rather than an individual carburetor number. The correct OEM carburetor kit for an E20CREUM engine is factory part number 0431897 (often sold as 431897) but the parts padge says no longer avalible.

Correct, the original part# is NLA. It has been superseded by Carb Kit #0439073.

what is the number 19 screw for?

I believe it’s just a plug. #15 is the ideal mix adjustment.IIRC, Some models around that vintage used the same top cover, & made some changes during the year.
I have a 1996, 9.9 with a top cover that is similiar.
#19, along with a small rubber O-ring plugs that passage.
In fact, the part is labelled, “screw plug -idle passage”

Thanks so it does nothing then, is there any vids that anyone would think would be the one to watch for this carb rebuild. also is this the carb as mine?

It’s close enough. Look up the parts diagrams for both years carbs, you will see they are Similiar.
About 1991 they went to the carbs with the “nozzle well” & “flex tube”. Yours shows the same setup.
I didn’t watch the video, can’t vouch for how good it is…watch a couple, from those years

Correct

Right here on this site. Go to parts and engines click on the Marineengine.com at the top of the page if you have to..
Select Johnson Avenue whatever fill in the year, then click on the subsection carburetter gear case whatever you want it all comes up

That looks like the 9.9 / 15 HP carburetor.-----Adapted to the restricted air intake of the 30 HP to market a 20 HP rated 32 cubic inch engine series.
