motor has always worked well. lately i am getting a slight hesitation sometimes at full throttle. seems like something is "slipping" and you hear a higher pitch whine from the motor. any ideas

Perhaps the propeller ( rubber hub ) is slipping.--------Take it off / inspect / try another one.
