1996 88 hp Evinrude leaking water cover jacket

" I just bought this motor and

" I just bought this motor and was servicing it today (used Seafoam, changed plugs, gas filter, lower lube, and some electrical work). When I took the cover off and started the motor, I noticed that water was leaking out off, what I think is the water cover jacket. Not much, maybe a slight trickle.

Should I be concerned? How difficult to change the gasket? Looks like 14 bolts on each bank. Do the bolts snap off when trying to remove them? Bolts look a little rusty.

Compression is good: 120, 123, 125, and 127 respectively. Spark good too.

There is oxidation around the head gasket, but it is not leaking. Is oxidation around the head gasket normal?

You could try to get some win

You could try to get some windshield sealer( self wicking) or simply replace the gasket on the water jacket cover.

Are the bolts prone to snapping off? I am afraid of snapping bolts if I attempt to replace the gasket. It appears easy enough, but I don't want the headache of one or more snapped bolts to deal with.

" Replacing the gasket is a must for proper cooling operation of the engine. It is not difficult to do, and you will feel good about running the engine when it is done. The block is softer than the bolts so they should turn out okay. If not, spray some lubricating fluid on them, and letem' sit overnight. Try SLOWLY turning the outermost bolts first, and continue in a spiral pattern till you've loosened each bolt. Scrape off the old gasket until the surface of the jacket is clean and fresh. Insert the new gasket into position, using Evinrude/Johnson gasket sealer. It is a stinky, brown substance that comes in a little can that is purchased at your local Evinrude Dealer. It too, is a must have for replacing the gaskets on that perticular engine. Be liberal with the sealer, but keep the inside of the box clean as you don't want sealer to wind up in the cooling passages. "
