"I have a 1996 50hp Evinrude that runs fine until the batteries are fully charged. When the batteries reach full charge the engine begins to cutout, run sluggish and will sometimes completely die. I have replaced the batteries. If you unhook the battery cable it will run fine. Any ideas?"

"sounds like a car i had once.

"sounds like a car i had once.it would run off the battery until it was dead ,then i had to change it (carry a spare).
i have never heard of such a problem i suggest checking regulator thats my best answer,
hopefully someone else will jump on this one
david real what do you think?"

"Well the igition system is se

"Well the igition system is seperate from the 12v charging system, the two are not conected.
Interesting problem"

"Turn up the stereo, run the s

"Turn up the stereo, run the sounder, radio, lights...the battery won't ever fully charge! Or carry a dead battery with you at all times just to be sure. Seriously thats a weird one."

"maybe a voltage back feed thr

"maybe a voltage back feed thru reg/rec at full charge going to stator, try not to run it ,this problem could get expensive."

this is a regulated system so

this is a regulated system so by all rights this shouldnt happen.

i would run the diagnostic tests on the regulator.

i have a 2000 f-150 and from time to time it eats alternators .............the regulator goes out and over charges -----you know when its time to replace it because when you hit about 3700rpms eveything shuts down including the eng............until the rpms drops and therefor the voltage drops to an acceptable level.............ive replaced the battery along with the alt and it still occurs from time to time----havent found the prob yet.

if the tests come back good on the reg i would check the wiring for anything out of the ordinary.

sorry not much help............this is a new one to me....

"Thinking about your problem t

"Thinking about your problem the only thing the ignition system and charging system share is the stator, this is where i would start looking and maybe replacing"

"Without model number and a bi

"Without model number and a bit more info from Randy, it is all wild speculations.
Something is not right in the first post."
