1996 5.0 Volvo Penta FL will not idle

I have a 96 Regal boat with twin Volvo Penta 5.0 FL engines. One of the engines will not idle. It starts right up and run fairly smooth until it reaches operating temperature and gets rough and dies. It always starts right back up without a problem. I can get it up on a plane and it runs fine but when I slow down to an idle it runs a few minutes and dies. One odd thing is that when I am running at cruising speed without touching the throttle I get a small surge in power 2 to 3k RPM surge just for a few seconds and then back down to normal.

I have changed out the spark plugs, plug wired, rotor, distributor cap, checked the timing. I have rebuilt the carburetor, changed the fuel filter. The only thing I haven’t done is change the fuel pump or coil.

Any thoughts on what my problem might be?

First thing I would try is setting float level.....

Then idle speed setting with a vacuum gauge.....

What brand/ model carb do you have?

You could swap carbs and see if problem swaps to different engine...

Swapped the carbs (Holly 2V part #3850712) problem didn’t track. Doesn’t appear to be the Carburetor. What do you think about it being the fuel pump (it is not an electric pump)?
The periodic surge in power at cruising speed seems to be part of the same problem and I would guess is a fuel flow issue.

You might have a check valve device at the tank that may be failed/ defective.

(non-return valve?)

Could be restricting flow to fuel pump.

Re: 1996 Volvo Penta FL will not idle

The problem turned out to be a bad ignition coil. After spending nearly $1,000.00 trouble shooting this perplexing problem it turned out to be a $60.00 part replacement. No matter how you try to minimize maintenance cost at the end of the day Boat still stands for:
· Break
· Out
· Another
· Thousand
Thanks for the help.
