"on the opposite side of the drain/fill on the lower unit are 2 machine made holes. Oil/grease has dripped out of these holes, but engine runs fine and after loosening the fill screw, there seems to be adequate oil in the lower unit. These holes are not addressed in the manual. Anyone know the answer to the function of these?"

"Sandy, I believe you are refering to drain holes which are the lower unit.

The purpose of these is allow any water in the exhaust housing (leg) to drain out in case of cold weather to prevent a freeze crack.

The oil that you see coming out of them is simply "gunk" burnt/unburnt oil from the exhaust which has kinda oozed down to these drain holes - you may also see the same "stuff" come out of the middle of the prop (thru-hub exhaust).

This is normal and nothing to worry about..."
