1996 40hp limited power

Purchased a 1996 Evinrude 40 hp 2 stroke based on video on muffs and conversation with owner. Bought the Seloc manual - use with caution because it covers 10 years of all motors.

Initially had problem getting it fired but cured with spray mix into carbs. Checked spark with tester - weak at best. Stop circuit good.

First trip to lake was limited in power (to less than half expected) based on previous experience with an older motor on boat. Also developed a habit of dying at idle.

Checked compression : 145 psi on both but gage may be high. Will retest with another.

Replaced fuel pump and repaired air leaks in suction side gas line.

Rebuilt carbs with OEM kits.

Checked Lync/sync and idle stop was set high. Carb linkage OK. Idle timing was advanced by 4 degrees (TDC to TDC -2).so reset it with timer base adjust. Had to bump idle stop again to keep it running. Still no more power.

So far I’m part in the dark without a tach - on order. Jury therefore out on timing.

So I think the fuel side is OK but I’m antsy about spark. Coils tested OK and it was willing to run on 1 cylinder (each) at idle but would occasionally die on both cylinders.

I’m going to check timer base resistance next and am building a DVM adapter for peak AC voltage. Will pull flywheel for a good look at wires.

The only other item I can see is the power pack but I can’t find any troubleshooting for it.

This motor was the best of the pack, apparently well cared for except for the above link settings and missing screws and a munched gasket on the air box cover, Now I’m wondering.

What am I missing ?

Thanks for any comments.
