1996 40hp 2-stroke electricals cooked

I made a stupid mistake and hooked up the starter battery in reverse on my 1996 Envinrude 40-hp two stroke. It's my first boat and I just wasn't paying attention. The model is an E40TLEDS. The plastic bracket for the solenoids on the tilt/trim system fried and melted. Smoke was pouring out from behind. The trim motor still runs but now there's no spark to the engine. What else ould have cooked across the ignition system with that connection reversed? Is the coil dead too? Could the power pack be fried now also? It's really frustrating and I don't think I can afford a repair shop to go through everything. The engine hasn't run for probably 5 years or more so there could be problems in general under those circumstances, but the engine condition under the cowl is like new. It has fresh fuel, oil, etc. Any help you can give is appreciated.

Does the motor turn over with enough rpms to start with the battery hooked up right?if so use an inductive timing light to see if you got fire....go from there...if the motor has been setting for 5 years i would check compression before i started spending money on it....the carbs are probably going to need pulling and a kit....the inductive timing light will tell you that you got fire but thats just a starting point...get back to us with these prelim results...

Yes, it turns over easily and quickly. The battery is new and charged. I'll try the timing light and see what happens. Thanks. I'll keep you posted.

Well, she has spark and with some starting fluid shot into the carbs it fired and ran strong for 2 seconds until the starting fluid was consumed. I primed the fuel line but couldn't get it to run off the starting fluid. I guess it's time to pull the carbs and put a kit in them. I don't suppose it has an electric fuel pump that could be affected the electrical problem? Also, the tilt and trim works just fine so I guess the electricals aren't cooked too badly. I'll probably go ahead and change out the solenoid bracket and wiring harness anyway. Any tips on the carbs or other fuel related problems is most welcome.
