1996 40 hp No Tach Reading

I just bought this boat. It has a 40 hp 2 stroke 4 cylinder on it. When I bought the boat there was not a tach or volt meter installed. I installed both new gauges and the tach does not work. The volt meter showed no charge. I opened up the motor and found the VR/rectifier was bad. Replaced this and now charging well but tach still does not work. When powered up the tach goes to zero as it should, but does nothing else. Thoughts??

Try using the other wire from the stator to signal the tach. Had that weird problem a few times.

The gray tach sending wire hooks to the gray output wire of the VR. The 2 yellow wires from the stator both connect to the yellow wires on the VR. Are you saying you disconnected one of these yellow wires from the VR and connected it directly to the gray tach wire and left it that way?

I was able to fix the problem and get the tach working. A previous owner had done some rewiring and the tach sender wire coming out of the control was not present behind the dash. I thought I had the correct wire, but did not. Ran a new wire from the tach to the sender wire in the harness and it worked.
