1996 200hp johnson exhaust seal

After changing the water pump

After changing the water pump and installing the lower unit I think I didn't get the exhaust seal in right because when the motor is running in neutral it looks like the exhaust is coming out of the top of th gearcase. Will this harm anything if I run it until I can get it to a cove to lower the gearcase and see if I can fix it? Can I lower it enough to see whats wrong without diconnecting the shift?

"it won't hurt to run it.

"it won't hurt to run it. it sounds like the seal on the exhaust adapter rolled on you. if you are lucky it rolled on the bottom and the lower will drop down enough to check. make sure you have someone hold the lower, don't let it hang on the shift rod. more than likely it is the upper seal on the adapter though. you might be able to work it back in place, but i would plan on having to drop the lower."

After checking where the bubbl

After checking where the bubbles are coming from it seems like the exhaust is going into the water pump chamber because they seem to be coming out the bracket bolts on the engine at fast idle in neutral. When it just idles there is no bubbles.Does that mean it is the lower seal on the waterpump side and if I ran it about 6 miles
to the nearest cove would the gasses be sucked out by moving forward? Is there water in the waterpump chamber when the motor is down? I don't mean in the waterpump housing but around it.

"Most probably seal '21' that has been dislocated, but even '55' might have been mooved if You had the inner exhaust tube down.
As long as Your temp alarm does not go off, no big problem, but You will get a lot of soot around the waterpump and by time burn the impeller and loose cooling. The pump is ABOVE water when planning, but at that speed most of the exhaust will be sucked out through the prop unless You runn at max speed. Idling, the pump is below water line.

Thanks again Morten I didn't have the exhaust housing out so I think it must be the front of #21 seal. I'm going to wait for a calm day and low tide to see if I can fix it in the cove. I was going to try to back out the bolts far enough to get a look. I didn' want to drop the leg when it's in the water. I have water preasure gauges so I'll keep an eye on them.
