I have a 150 Johnson outboard (1996 on plat but when I enter the model number it says it's a 1997) and it trys to go into reverse but will not. I didn't know if the adjustments on the cable going into the motor housing will adjust this?

Remove the cable from the engine and shift the engine linkage by hand. You can do this with the engine NOT running by spinning the prop by hand to align the inner shifting parts.

Did you or someone else have the lower unit off and turn the shift rod out of adjustment?

I don't think the lower unit has ever been off. It just started not going into reverse since its been cold but I don't know if its just a coincident?

Well the lower unit may have been off if you are not the original owner.--Someone may have turned the shiftrod and that puts it out of adjustment.--------------If it is out a little bit you may be able to compensate with cable adjustment.-----Lower unit repairs can be costly.---You might want to check into this height adjustment !

Are you saying that you have been using the engine and it had been shifting perfectly... then one day, without anyone doing any (ANY) work to the engine at all, the shifting went haywire all by itself?

If so, look at the plastic adjustable knob on the shift cable at the engine (where it is normally clamped in) to see if possibly the clamp locking bolt(s) may have allowed the trunion to jump out of the retaining slot.
