1996 115hp tilt/trim hydrolics

Hi all, 1196 115hp Evinrude tilt/trim works fine but engine will not stay in up position. Seems to go down when to hydo rams on the trailer and loses trim under power(down). Is this electrical or hydro...suggestions...thanks in advance
 
Thanks for the response racerone. Yes, the manual release is/was closed. I inspected and could not find an obvious sign of any leak. ? Next step I guess would be to check/fill with fluid? if so could you briefly outline this for me, the engine/boat is new to me and I'm getting, but not that familiar with it. thanks
 
Tilt the motor up and add fluid to reservoir if it needs it.---------Could also be an internal leak on some seals / check valves.
 
thanks, checked hydraulic fliud level....unscrewed cap, fluid everywhere. re-filed. Still the same..slow drop to the extended tilt rams. To check valves do I need to take apart that assembly? thanks
 
Check valve assemblies are usually screwed into the unit.------------------Best to consult a factory manual to see which one might be the culprit.
 
thanks for everything...it seems a bit better for some reason. Think this project has become a bit beyond me...especially mid-season. Cheer
