"I'm a little confused...

"I'm a little confused... I need to replace the water pump, however, after reading the manual regarding disconnecting the shift linkage, the manual said to remove the linkage pin of the fhist model and push the linkage towards the back. After pulling the pin the linkage does not move towards the back it only disengages the shiftlinkage from the bell crank. Do I need to split the housing case to get under the carbs to a different area of the linkage?

Thanks
Jeff"

"Jeff.... I retired some years

"Jeff.... I retired some years before that engine was manufactured, however I would assume that the shift linkage setup is the same.

Remove that clevis pin that goes thru the shifting arm.

Now, push the shift arm in, that is push it towards the other side of the engine. This action causes the shift pin on the other end of that shift linkage to disengage from the top of the shift rod hole.

To reinstall, simply make sure that the shift rod pin ingages the shift rod top hole when pulling the shift linkage back into position, then reinstall the clevis pin.

Why the instructions would say to push the shift linkage "back" is somewhat strange."
