Just bought a new starter and solenoid to solve a starter that was not engaging with the drive gear. The new one is doing the same thing...it turns fast but does not lift high enough to engage the gear....the wiring was getting hot do to some kind of miswire problem........I cleared the short but an still having other issues.....also it should be noted that the up tilt motor is not lifting the engine.......any ideas???

Did you get the correct starter? Is the starter not meshing w/the flywheel? Is the starter drive gear running into the edge of the flywheel? Are all of the wire connections clean and tight? Some of the wiring may be corroded internally causing it to act like a resistor which makes the wire get hot. How is the battery condition? Does it have at least 13.0 vdc at full charge? Does the voltage stay above 12.0 vdc when starting?
