1995 mercury 40 hp model 1040302RD test prodeures ?

Hello everyone and thank you for having a forum like this as a resource.
I recently bought a 1995 40 hp 4 cly 2 stroke outboard.
it was running fine until a rope got caught in my prop and stopped it dead.
since then i was able to start it again but it sounded off and seriously lacked power.
I took it for a run to test it out the other day and it died completely. Now it seems I have NO Spark . not sure if this is a result of the rope issue or a new problem on it's own.
I do not have a book for this motor and was wondering what are the test procedures for a no spark problem ?
I'm no mechanic but i am fairly handy on the tools.
I figure I'll have to test everything from the stator to the coils and all in between.
Can any of you help me with the procedures and test values ? or even point me in the right direction to get started ?
 
Not sure if that motor has a flywheel key or not. If so, you may have sheared the key. Pull the flywheel and see.

Thank you very much. I did not even know there was such a thing. I just googled it after i read your reply and will go look.
 
well I just had the flywheel off and checked the Flywheel key and it seemed to be in perfect condition.
I put the motor back together now and still have no spark. turned over fine but absolutely no spark at all.
anyone have any ideas where i should be looking next ???
 
You'll have to go through the components one by one with a DVA meter to see what's not working right.
