"Hi...I am a Merc outboard newbie with a long tale of woe. I bought a used boat and motor yesterday from a Merc dealer. 1995 Merc 15m...Serial O6261692 ......with low hours and they said so they had to do no repairs to it....had him start it before buying and it started up after a few pulls, pissed a little water till it warmed up then pissed alot of water. Looked good to me. Got it home and I started it in a garbage can of water and it ran OK....till I remembered I had not added oil to my gas tank yet..oops. I shut it down after running only a minute or two.
Exhaust was smoking pretty good so I was hoping it was still using up the dealer gas mix (with oil) that was in the filter bowl. Today I tried to start it and it won't fire up. Have spark at the plugs (new plugs) but it wont fire even with a squirt of starting ether......did I ruin this nice little motor!! I heard these mid 90's motors were good engines from Merc. I was also confused as to how to use the prime button? Any HELP is appreciated....."

STOP using starter fluid. There is no lube in it. Put some pre-mix in a spray bottle. Your motor is probably ok since it only ran a very short time without oil. I'm not sure about choking that small motor so hopefully someone will jump in here.

After searching this forum a bit I read one of Graham Lamb's posts about how you start these "primer" motors and I think I may have flooded it?

Wish it had come with a manual. Is there a good way to clear out the flooded carb?

"Hi Terry,

for manuals, yo

"Hi Terry,

for manuals, you can try Brunswick Marine's EMEA site - http://www.brunswickmarineemea.com/download/preparesearch?mod=4&lang=EN

AFAIK, this is for their European products, but you may be able to find the manual for an equivalent outboard there. Not sure which one that would be for your engine (being a Merc newbie myself), but for example I located the manual for my Belgian '93 Merc 15 without problems. The manual is branded Mariner but the machine appears to be identical, this might work for yours as well.

Graham's post sums up the primer/fast idle knob function nicely, but here is the quote from my manual:

ROTATE KNOB - Clockwise (to stop) when starting engine or to increase idle speed

PULL KNOB COMPLETELY OUT - (After rotating fully clockwise) to inject fuel into manifold for fast, easy starting when engine is cold

PUSH KNOB COMPLETELY IN - After engine starts. As engine warms up, rotate knob counterclockwise to return to normal idle speed.

Simple as that. Hope this helps!<font face=""times new roman,times,roman""></font>"
