1995 Evinrude 48SPL Starts, then Stops

A friend is at his wit's end trying to fix his '95 48SPL (E48ESLE0S).

He has...

Checked plugs
Cleaned the carburetors
Rebuilt fuel pump
Replaced fuel hoses

It will start, but dies after about 10-15 seconds.

Any help with further troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.

What are the compression numbers?
How does it sound when it is running?

Cleaned carbs how? Spray can, or teardown with new kits?

- He doesn't have a way to get a compression reading, but says it's "good".
- Carbs were taken apart and cleaned using spray, no parts replaced.
- The engine sounds fine, during the short times it runs.

Thanks for any help.

Was the highspeed jet that is screwed into the float bowl removed to verify it is clean ??-------This is often overlooked in the backyard !-----This is clearly a fuel supply problem !

With a timing light hooked up does spark continue as motor stops / starts to die ??--------------Does it keep running if the manual fuel pump is operated ?

Unfortunately, he doesn't have a timing light.

If you mean pumping the bulb on the fuel line, it stays hard while the engine is running - can't really be pumped.

You should be able to squeeze the bulb a little bit!!------Try another fuel line or bulb.-------After the motor starts what happens when key is pushed in when it falters ????----Clearly this problem is due to a lack of fuel.----A timing light would be a good addition to a tool box for future trouble shooting.----------Testing is the way to a path forward.

When he disconnects the fuel hoses from the carbs and squeezes the bulb. plenty of fuel moves freely.

Not sure I understand your second question.

Pushing the key in operates the fuel primer to richen the mixture.-------------This is used while cranking and after the motor starts you may have to push the key in momentarily untill the motor warms up.----You are advancing the " throttle only " lever to start it I hope.-------Do you have an owners manual for the motor ??

OK, thanks.

Pushing the key makes it run slightly longer, but it still dies.

Lifting the "throttle only" lever actually makes the engine die faster.

He has no manual.
