1995 Evinrude 115 - Starts, runs for 3-15 seconds, then dies.

History – 3 years ago. I inherited a Lund/Evinrude fishing/run-a-bout from a family member.

2 years ago - The boat started, ran for 15 seconds, then died (like someone turned the key off). Tried restarting with no results - Sometimes the engine would run and I would give it throttle. Engine would purr nicely for a few seconds, then die like the key was turned off. I brought the boat home and cleaned what I thought was a significant amount of oil out of the carbs after removing the screws to the float bowl. I took it back down to the lake and it started right up and kept running. It ran great for the season (3-4 months) without any problem. Started right up on each of my 6-10 trips to the lake that summer.

Last summer - Before bringing to the lake I cleaned the carbs of excessive oil in the bowls. I brought to the lake and fired it up, ran for 30 seconds, then dies like the key had been turned off. The engine sounded smooth/good. I tried restarting at the docks for an hour then threw in the towel. I was disgusted and parked it for the remainder of the year.

Two weeks ago – Installed two shut off valves (oil and fuel). My reason for installing valves was that I thought temperature and air pressure could be creating pressure/vacuum problems for oil and fuel tank. Flooding my carbs with too much oil. FYI - When I cut the gas line to install valve it looked like oil had run back into that line.

2 days ago – Cleaned carbs of oil. Tried starting it on muffs. Engine would start, run for 3-10 seconds then die. During a period when the motor was running I squeezed the bulb to see if it would extend, no it did not. I also took off the gas cap. At the end of the day, I drained the carbs of significant gas/oil mix and fired in carb cleaner til the cows came home. Left the air box off and engine cover off to air it out.

Suggestions - This engine has less than 200 hours on it. It was always considered a “hard starter”, but I think it has an “on again-off again” malfunction. Perhaps electrical, coil, short.

Thanks in advance.

No such thing as one of these motors being " hard to start "------Out line your starting procedure as perhaps you are missing a key step.----Do you understand that the starter / battery / battery cables must all be good to crank it over at 250+ RPM in order to fire up ?----Have you done a compression test ?--=---I am not sure installing those valves is a good idea.----It is always best to fix the real problem.----Hopefully the starter has not been damaged with repeated cranking !----Model # required as there are 2 different 115 HP motors.

Racerone - Fake news on you regarding your comments on Evinrude as a non-hard starter.

Starting procedures - Every combination possible.

I understand battery capacity.

No compression test.

Why valves not a good idea.

What is my real problem here on this Evinrude gem?

Starter, who give a rats-@5^ about the starter. I am worried about this diamond of an engine.

Well ----good luck with getting the motor sorted out !!!-----Nobody can help you if you can not answer questions / post information on this motor !!

Model is L115GLEOS

What should the starting procedure be? I followed the manual for starting procedure and a thousand other cadences. Including hammering bulb, jacking throttle, removing airbox, pushing key in for extended period (I can hear the quick start engage). Pressing and turning, hammering and juking. Turning ignition, blasting the stereo, whilst raising the trim. Opening center window, removing gas cap. unhooking trailer from truck, whilst turning ignition with the vigor of a champion steed.

Let me know the solution, racer, and sorry if I triggered you with the fake news comment.

That's too bad. Was it the hammering and juking that got ya? Had me chuckling imagining what your faced looked like whilst reading.
