"I have a 1995 Sea Ray 250 Sundancer with 7.4L mercruiser Bravo III. When I try to trim the outdrive up or down the solenoids chatter rapidly. I checked voltage to the soleniods and had 13.9 volts(own board charger on) I jumped out the solenoids and the trim motor runs very slow and sound like it is trying to lock up. I order a new motor and replaced it. Took apart the the pump and made sure that everything was clear and not gummed up. The new motor ran fine on the bench before re-installing. Once installed, the new motor did the same as the existing motor. I disconnected the trim hoses at the bottom of the outdrive and ran the motor. The soleniods chattered a little bit, but stopped and the motor ran sluggish and would very in rpm's. I hooked the hoses back up to the outdrive and motor bogged down again. The trim was working fine when I put it in storage in November. I had a heater in the engine compartment all winter(I live in Louisiana, not much winter here.) and the drive was in the down position. Any ideas?"

I have had the complete trim assy in and out several times. All the connections a tight and clean at the solenoids. Everything is tight at the batteries. Would there be any junctions between the batteries and the trim assy?

"should not be. I have run into bad grounds at the bolt on the unit itself, and sometimes ground wire is connected to engine at flywheel housing. these get corroded, and You can't see. if you've ruled these out, check the condition of the battery wires. if cut, can wick up water and deteriorate. would still show good voltage, but won't pass current. try to check voltage while operating. You would see a big voltage drop."

"There is a big voltage drop.

"There is a big voltage drop. All the lights go out it the cabin and the radio goes off. Something else might being going on also. I noticed when I turn on any 12volt system,(bilge, water, navigation lights, etc.) the radio goes off. Everything was working fine in November. I guess what has me looking at the trim motor or pump is that when I jumped the solenoids the motor boggs down."

First locate the main engine wiring loom plug. Pull it apart and make sure all the pins are clean and not corroded.

Check also the cables where they attach to the main battery switch.

If thats ok. sounds like a main ground or Main B+ problem. You need to check your main ground cable first by placing your multimeter from - battery terminal to clean metal on the engine block. Operate pump if you get voltage indication on meter you have a bad cable. Replace.

B+ can be checked same way. place multimeter from + battery terminal to + terminal on the back of the starter. Operate pump if you get voltage indication on meter you have a bad + cable somewhere between the starter and battery terminal. Could also be a bad main switch contact.

As indicated in posts above, sometimes bad or corroded connections can lurk under the plastic sleeves and connections and not always looking at it will show the problem.

If you have a further problem a marine electrician wouldnt charge too much to fix a problem like this. I dont think its major, and you'd be back boating quicker."

"Thanks everyone for the help.

"Thanks everyone for the help. After trouble shooting everything possible it turned out that BOTH batteries were breaking down under any load. It threw me a curve ball because the onboard charger was on and indicating good voltage. When I removed the charger the batteries had 12.6 volts, but when I tried the trim pump voltage would drop to 2.7 volts. I hooked up jumper cable directly from the battery to the trim pump to eliminate all connections in the boat. Both batteries were bad under a load. Went down to Bass Pro Shop bought two new batteries and everything is working great. Thanks again for all the help."

"It might even happen again. your charger might be overcharging, and boiling the batteries out."
