I had noticed this winter whil

I had noticed this winter while duck hunting that the stream of water that comes out of the motor would completely stop at times and then start flowing again. Even when it does flow it doesn't seem like it has much force. Can somebody tell me if this sounds like a problem or is this a common thing. Thanks

"I don't know when the pum

"I don't know when the pump was replaced last. The person I bought it from doesn't know either. As far as the thermostat, I don't know much about outboards yet, but is this a visual I can see without tearing it apart? Sorry I know this don't give you guys much to work with."

"pump needs to be replaced eve

"pump needs to be replaced every 2 years, or you run into these types of problems. Graham is our local mariner nut, oops, expert, lets see what he has to say. Thermo could be the cause but lets go get a new pump"

Thanks JB and Jim. I"ll go

Thanks JB and Jim. I"ll go ahead and plan on replacing the pump before spring and see if Graham has any other suggestions. I am a good mechanic but never have tinkered with an outboard. I do have a seloc manual for this motor. Is this a job I can do on my own to save some money?

"yes, first time about an hour

"yes, first time about an hour or a little more, just need to find out about the shift shaft linkage, and how it disconnects. Position new pump on shaft, lube pump, push housing down on pump and turn drive shaft cw, housing goes right onto pump. I always due mine in neutral, that way I know if the linkage moves"

"As far as parts. Is this some

"As far as parts. Is this something I should get from my local marina or is there somewhere else better? When buying the pump, does it come with any seals or gaskets that I might need or are these purchased seperatly? How much approx. am I expected to pay?"

"you can look at this site, An

"you can look at this site, Andrew sells parts. The pump is about $20, the entire kit is with a new housing and gaskets is about triple that. If the housings has never been done, now the time, every 2 years on the pump, every 4 on the housing. Still a easy job. Buy some lower end lube and new gaskets for drain plugs."

"I would change the impeller,

"I would change the impeller, the plate and gasket at the very least and perhaps the seal in the water-pump cover. If you are buying from Merc they have 3 different (levels) of impeller kits - a basic impeller, the one I mentioned (including the plate and main seal) and one that includes seals for the base and around the drive and shift shafts.

Every other year I throw in the basic impeller and use the kit with the plate every other change (4 year intervals). Unless there is water intrusion in the lower unit I don't bother with the "complete" kit.

Most 9.9 came from factory "without" a thermostat, but one may have been added and it should be checked. If you find it doesn't have one, perhaps that is 20 bucks you should spend. With the thermostat the motor will idle considerably better.

The job is fairly easy, although the shift-shaft can be a bit puzzling if you have never removed it before. A Seloc's manual is a good investment and covers your particular model quite nicely, however, this can be done without a manual. If you do it yourself and get stuck I have some good diagrams/pictures I can post to help you out..."

thanks for all the great advis

thanks for all the great advise. I think I can take it from here. If I run in to any problems I'll post back. Thanks again.

"Your motor sounds like it is

"Your motor sounds like it is working correctly. I have the same motor in a 15HP and it does the same thing. When they do have a thermostat in them they behave the way you discribed. Also since it is winter and the water is colder the thermostat would shut off more often. Only a small amount of water is suppose to come out as this is only an indicator outlet. Most of the water cools the exhaust chamber and flows out the center of your prop. I would check for the thermostat first, if it has one it sounds like it's working correctly. If you really think it's not running cool enough then remove the shroud and get the motor up to temp, then put your hand on the block. If you can hold it there then your OK, just don't grab the coil or flywheel.
This is not quite on subject but I installed a set of Boyesen two stage reeds on my 15 and It seened to accelerate better with a little more top end. The real magic with these reeds was how much lower I could adjust the idle. I was trolling in my light 14' cartopper using a 10.5" pitch prop and slowing down to about 1 mph. The fish liked that allot and so did I."

"I will test that before I rep

"I will test that before I replace it. Since I don't know when or if the pump has been changed, I'm going to put a new impeller, plate and main seal in it as Graham and JB advised me. The motor does seem to run well though. Do you know if I will be able to see the thermostat while replacing the impeller?"

"Chuck, the thermostat is up o

"Chuck, the thermostat is up on the power head, behind a cover just above the spark plugs (held on by two bolts). If you do go to check it out, at the very least, grab a thermostat cover gasket from Merc - they crumble most times when you remove the cover...

Removing that cover is also a good way to get a look into the water jacket to have a look for any build-up caused by hard water or salt water as the case may be..."
