"I have a 1995 Bass boat with a 1995 Evinrude 70HP 3-cylinder outboard. The motor locked up on me last May while on the lake. Upon dis-assembly, I found out that one of the circlips that holds the wrist pin in on the middle cylinder had come out and got between the piston/sleeve and badly scored the piston and sleeve wall. How in the world does a circlip come out of the groove!? I also noticed that the motor had been rebuilt at some point by the previous owner because the middle piston was not the same physically as the other two. I then purchased a new sleeve and piston from Wiseco. I am about to put all this back together. It says I need a rod cap alignment tool. I saw a previous post from 2006 on the subject and it referenced vertical and horizontal score marks. Mine appear to be vertical and look more like large chamfers. Also the split line between rod and cap is not purely horizontal. It sort of starts out horizontal than angles up at a 10 degree angle. Do I need this tool?? Thanks for looking."
