I am looking for suggestions on a problem. New 5.7GI TBI (HU) motors were installed in my 1995 Cruisers Inc 3175 rogue. The motors have not worked correct since the new install. The shop said they have read the ECM and there were no trouble codes and nothing seems to be wrong. I am at the point where they want to start charging as they feel the problem is not their responsibility.
Both motors are acting the same with the starboard slightly worse than the port. The problem seems to start after the motors warm up. The motors idle rough and want to stall when accelerated in neutral. Both motors backfire from the intake occasionally when accelerated quickly in neutral or under load. The problem seem to straighten out above 1000 RPM, although may still be rough, but tougher to detect at higher RPM.
Both motors seem to run OK at higher RPM with no problems. The motors top out in WOT at 4600 RPM with no problems. The timing was checked several times (I was told) with no problems. The gas is new and the filter / water separators were new at the install then changed out and inspected a second time with no problems. The mechanic did indicate he had to install new ignition modules in both motors because he could not get the proper advance. The mechanic seem to understand the ECM must be placed in service mode prior to setting the base timing
Finally, the old motors had none of the stalling and rough idle issues prior to being removed from service. The repower consisted of long blocks with the old ECM, TBI , intake and exhaust manifolds being used.
