"welcome to marine engine!

someone probably put in transmission fluid.......its an acceptable replacement-----i put some in mine for a while, then changed back to regular.

didnt see much difference other than price."

"thanks dave.... I think this is a great forum. so I guess either will work? I got all the air out and it seems to work fine. I thought it is odd that you tilt the motor all the way up to service. I have a 32 baja with 454 mags, and work on them all the time, but this outboard thing is all new to me. i need to replace seals and water pump in the lower gearcase, but not sure about doing that."

water pump is easy just pull the lower unit and your practically done.

now the seals---some of them can be a pain in the a** from what ive read.......havent had to do any myself---yet.

you can get exploded diagrams and parts list on evinrude....as far as prices go this is the cheapest site ive found----especially considering everyone carries the same parts.

you can also get partial repair manuals from googlebooks.com but i dont think the water pump nor the seal replacemnet are in the book preview......although it may not hurt to find out.

The factory service manual for this motor is available on this site for $50.00...it is a must if you want to do any service work on the motor

"thanks bob. I have ordered the manual. I have the lower gearcase removed and on a stand with the prop removed. when in gear, I can move the prop shaft approximately 45 degrees of rotation before moving the driveshaft. this happens in forward and reverse. is this play normal?"

"yes........between the gears

"yes........between the gears ,shift clutch dog and forward and rev gear,is where the play comes from...."

"thanks... that seems excessiv

"thanks... that seems excessive, but I'm glad it's normal. Does that not cause a lot of wear when shifting from forward to nuetral to reverse? The case is dry now. I guess with lube in it, it is a lot more cushioned."
