Re: 50 evinrude need help please no power
Compression gauges are cheap, purchase one, remove all spark plugs, take a compression reading. What are the readings per cylinder?
Spark... The plenty of spark statement doesn't do it. THe spark on that model, with all spark plugs removed, must jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP! Using the spark plugs to check the spark is a waste of time. A spark tester can be purchased in various automotive part stores, or you can build the following one easily.
(
Spark Tester - Home Made)
(J. Reeves)
A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a few finishing nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere. Use small alligator clips on the other end of the wires to connect to ground and to the spark plug connector that exists inside of the rubber plug boot.
Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas they could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:
..........X1..........X2
.................X..(grd)
..........X3..........X4

Synchronization.... Remove the carburetor face plate, engine NOT running but in forward gear, apply full throttle and check to see if both carburetor throttle butterflies are fully open (horizontal). Close throttle, then check to see that both butterflies are actually closed, and that they open and close at the same time. Make sure that the throttle butterflies just start to open when the scribe mark on the cam is dead center with the throttle cam roller.... not before or after.
The idle timing is something that you will need to look up in your manual as I don't know exactly what that setting is for your engine. It pertains to a certain timing degree setting when the cam scribe mark is dead center with the roller. Also, look up what the full spark advance timing setting is supposed to be and let us know what those two settings are.
Let us know what you find (Compression, spark, carb butterflies, cam to sam roller mark).
