"I got the factory manual for

"I got the factory manual for my engine e50tleod. I put a new impeller and all new seals in gearcase. tested and installed as manual instructed. now I have no spark. engine ran fine last fall. I had carbs and lower side covers off. I have checked connections and wires to see if I caused problem. I can't see anything wrong. I started electrical tests in manual, found nothing wrong so far. Is there something simple I am missing? I would like a good schematic for this electrical system. Is that available? The manual has good instructions, but it would be nice to have color coded wiring schematic. I feel I may have caused a problem, but can't find it.
thanks for your help

"have u tested for spark,....w

"have u tested for spark,....w/a spark tester,..or,...are u assuming,..u have no spark?"

"JW.. I tested with the spark

"JW.. I tested with the spark plugs hooked up and held to ground and just the leads with scrwdriver held close to ground. no spark at all. ..... thanks David.. I see the schematic in the back of the manual, but it would be nice to have colors."

"on the engine,in a plug,remov

"on the engine,in a plug, remove the blk/yell wire..leave disc and try..if it is in a plug by itself, just unplug it.this will eliminate the key sw and boat sys.."

"first, JW, I appreciate all t

"first, JW, I appreciate all the help you give on this site. I read a lot of them and your input is a great help to all of us. Now.. I have already disconnected that wire. If I am looking at the manual correctly, this wire eliminates the key switch and lanyard switch. It did not help. This may not be the case, but I can't help but blame myself for the problem. When I removed the gearcase, I had the carbs off and VRO loose. I also had the side covers off. I first thought I probably pinched or disconnected a wire. everything looks good. I have been through the troubleshooting in the manual and everything seems ok. I do not have any special test equipment, so some test I've done are definately in question. I have three volt/ ohm meters, but none measure small volts or ohms so some of those tests may be in question."

"when I check for voltage at t

"when I check for voltage at the terminal strip on the side of the engine, I get voltage at both terminals with red wires. when cranking, I get voltage at both terminals with yellow wires. I am trying to think of anything that might help you pinpoint a problem."

"thanks for the nice words....

"thanks for the nice words.....
in absence of test equip,...
first,..ck all connections, making sure a small conn did not get pushed too far back in plug,to make contact.
next---the very most common prob,..is a bad pwr pack..but of course,...not always...
if u want to keep testing, and the ohms ck out,...u need to ck for a grounded condition of all wires..
then,do cranking tests,...
does the stator, appear to have been overheated?
on cranking tests,u will need to read,.'peak' voltage..voltage to,the pack fr sensors and chg coils, voltage ,to coils..."

I haven't removed the flyw

I haven't removed the flywheel. Isn't that required to check the stator? I have a 12 amp system don't I?

"look up under,the flywheel,..

"look up under, the flywheel,..to see if coils on stator, appear to have been overheated..
if the ohms ck out,and u have no wires in a grounded condition,...I'd replace the pack."

"OK.. I have gone through the

"OK.. I have gone through the troubleshooting again. coils look ok, but it's hard to see. everything seems to check out until I get to step 3 ... the charge coil output test. My meters are not peak-reading and the scale is 1000 volts, but I get no meter fluctuation at all when cranking and hooked to terminals a and b. also when I get to the sensor coil output test, I am not getting .5 volts. does this indicate a problem in one or more of these, or does the power pack supply voltage to these and could still be the problem?"

"JW... sorry to keep jumping a

"JW... sorry to keep jumping around, but I rechecked the charge coil and sensor coil output test with a digital automatic scale tester, which is not good in this case, I know, because it keeps jumping up and down. as it was jumping around, I saw 300, 200, and even 280 on the charge coil output. I saw .5, .8 , and .9 on the sensor coil test. I'm not getting good readings without the peak reading meter, but I think I am getting voltage on both tests. all the resistance checks on all the tests show good, no shorts on anything."

"the sensors,tell the pack,..w

"the sensors, tell the pack,..when,to fire,..chg coil supply voltage to pack, pack sorts it all out, sends to coils, coils amplify it,sending to plugs.
I would repl,the pwr pack."

"JWB.... I think I've foun

"JWB.... I think I've found the problem. after getting another meter, the charge coil was putting out about 230v ac. I can't find anywhere if the sensor coil puts out dc or ac, but it is putting out about .1 volt dc. is this supposed to be ac or dc? I removed the flywheel and coils. the sensor coil has rub marks on the inside of the coil. there are 2 places where metal is exposed on the inside. something has been rubbing it. The plastic ring holding the coil looks broken. is this ring split at the little arms on the side? what position are these little arms supposed to be when installed? one arm was out by the advance arm and the advance arm was hitting this plastic arm. when I buy this sensor coil, will the plastice ring and electrical connector come with the new sensor coil?
One more unrelated question. The tan and black wires coming from the oil tank are about 6 feet long and coiled up and ty-rapped. are these wires measured resistance wires that need to be this long?"

"230 is right on the money--pl

"230 is right on the money--plastic ring is split..sensor sounds good--dc--does'nt matter where the split is,on plastic ring,it is just a retainer.u will need to get another ring, does not come w/other parts.
length of wires to oil tank, are not critical, but must be functional for low oil warning."

are you saying the sensor coil

are you saying the sensor coil sounds serviceable? I'm getting .1 volt dc. what do you mean when you say get another ring? will the sensor coil come with amphenal connector?
