1995 30hp water pump

I have a 1995 Evinrude 30hp that the water pump has stopped pumping. I started taking the lower end off to change it but the shift rod doesn't have a coupling in it. Looks like the shift rod comes aloose from the top or did I miss something.

I think you can pivot the lower unit reveiling the pump

Not at all !!!!-----------You remove the water intake screens.------Clean the paint off the upper shift rod.----------Undo the coupling nuts.-----Slide the upper nut up.-----------Remove the split / black plastic piece.------------Lower unit now comes off.
