"Evinrude 25 HP E25TELEO S/N 03846045 will start okay, idle rough (fast, slow, normal, fast, etc.). Then when you run in open water wide open, it runs okay for 10-20 seconds then surges (looses power quickly). Then it will die. You can crank it and get it to limp back in by giving it gas and letting off and messing with the choke.

Have replaced gas, gas tank, line/bulb to engine. Vent is open. Also used the OMC carb cleaner you let soak for 3-12 hours.

Any ideas? My email is [email protected]"

"JR.... Carburetors do not come and go. If the engine runs fine at any time after this problem takes place, there's nothing wrong with the carburetor. The exception would be a weird happening whereas debris might flake off of the inner portion of the fuel line which could close off the float needle valve intake, then float back later etc etc. It happens but few and far between.

Try having someone pump the fuel primer bulb when this problem arises (acting as a fuel pump). If this makes no difference, is the engine overheating?

The last scenario I can think of is that the stator/charge coil under the flywheel (beginning of the ignition system) has failed, cracked, and started to leak down. This scenario would allow the proper voltage to the powerpack when cold, but when hot, a voltage drop would exist causing erratic ignition.... and eventually no ignition.

" Thanks Joe,
It does not run

" Thanks Joe,
It does not run fine immediately after the problem. I could go through the same thing the next day and it will 1) Start 2)Run wide open okay for 10-20 seconds then suddenly loose power. Then after that it won't idle or anything. You have to keep starting it to get back to shore (I call it limping along). I am going to use the primer bulb as you suggested later today when my sons get home. As far as I can tell it's not overheating. I'll post the results of the primer bulb test tonight. Thanks again. " Well, we ran as you suggeste

" Well, we ran as you suggested pumping the bulb when she began to loose power. That caused the engine to regain power. Tried to die a second time and we pumped it and it regained power. Then she ran for 15 minutes straight with no problems and we came in. I took it out later and notice that fuel was leaking pretty bad at the connection to the engine. I am wondering if there's some sort of restriction downstream of that connection or if the fuel pump could be intermitantly causing that. By the way it did loose power again after about 20 seconds, we pumped it but didn't work as good this time due to the leak. Any further comments? Thank you for the help Joe. "

"JR.... The leaking fuel conne

"JR.... The leaking fuel connector will allow air to be drawn into the fuel pump. Now, guess what that does? Right, you guessed it... that causes the engine to surge due to (in effect) running low on fuel.

The cure is to either replace the leaking "O" Ring within the connector or simply purchase a new connector at Wal*Mart, K-Mart, your local dealership, etc.
