Howdy,
No issues last year. Took the boat out after sitting several months and reverse would not fully engage. There was a grinding and just enough engagement to move the boat backwards then it would disengage.
Also had water in gear case.
I dropped the gear case anticipating at minimum a seal rebuild.
After pressure test I found only the lower oil fill plug had a leak and a new plug and ring fixed the problem. Also, very minor metal on the magnet.
New gear lube and I’m able to manually put gear case into reverse, neutral and forward.
Per manual, I put gear case in forward and reinstalled. After installed, I could not get gear case out of forward with remote or by removing shift cable and manually moving the shift lever. The shift lever did feel sloppy and did not seem to be engaging.
I removed the gear case again and manually put gear case into neutral and had free propeller spin. I carefully reinstalled and I still had free propeller play. To test the movement of the linkage, I put throttle into forward. Propeller now is engaged in forward but now im not able to get gear case out of forward. I’m thinking the issue is not in the gear case because I can manually shift it while it’s removed. But…who knows. Cables look fine and again, everything worked fine last time it was out. It “seems” like this would be somewhere in the linkage. From the shift lever inwards, I am not familiar how it all works. I wouldn’t think the shift interupter would cause something like this . I have a Johnson service manual but not finding where this is addressed. One last note, I did find a wing nut that I have no idea where it would come from. Clue to this problem or another about to happen?
Any ideas or suggestions before it goes to the $$ experts?
