1995 130hp Johnson Started fine ...1 month later.....Not at all :(

Hi folks, this old thing ran and started fine one trip then about a month later prepping for another trip it wouldn't start at all. It gets plenty of fuel pressure, cleaned the carbs real good a couple of times,tried brand new fuel...It spits and kicks like it wants to go but wont . Did get it to go briefly once at a pretty high RPM for about 30 seconds but not clean at all....sounded labored. After that brief run there was a very noticeable difference between the temp of the port side cylinder heads and the starboard, which were cold. What do you think?? stator or rectifier?? I replaced the power pack about 2 years ago. Any and all help much appreciated......Thanks
 
check the compression and make sure the fire will jump 7/16 inch with a good snap..get back to us with the readings...
 
Yes sir papyson...Ok compression is 110-105 on three cylinders and 85 on the other.
Got a spark on three cylinders and none on one....Thinking then it might be a coil I switched them around and got a spark on the one I didn't before. I then switched the lead wires and didn't get a spark from the one coil. Looks like that particular lead/wire to the coil coming out of the power pack does not produce fire.
So maybe power pack ?? Thanks for your reply and help sir!!
 
looks like you have 3 problems....if the fire is good on the other three (check with gap tester) then one dead cylinder should not keep it from running...it should run on three...having spark means nothing..it is how good is the spark?...you could have border line stator or trigger problems and be at the point of picking on one part of he power pack...i would measure the spark before i spent money on a power pack...

you have too much difference in compression...something is seriously wrong on one cylinder... this is a case of spending a few bucks now or big bucks or scrapping the motor in the not so distant future...here again this probably not you start and run problem...

measure the spark and please get back to us..

sorry for the downer on the compression but thats my opinion...
 
Papyson, No sir the cylinder with low compression has fire. I bought a spark tester and checked them all with it. Both of the port side cylinders have a good spark 7/16" plus.
Neither of the starboard sides has a spark at all, guess I was seeing things yesterday trying to hold the plug up to a ground. Sorry for the confusion. Ran the spark tester down real close and still got nothing.
 
there is a small two prong plug coning from the trigger to the power pack...they are known to have pushed back pins that make tip to tip contact...the plug is round and its hard to see the problem unless you are looking specifically for it...their wires are also known for not making good contact within the pin...i would check that and then look for any sign of a meltdown of the stator..

this is a good place to go for more troubleshooting but you are going to need a dva adapter for your meter..
