WHILE RUNING AT CRUISE SPEED, 3K RPM, THE STARBOARD ENGINE JUST SHUT DOWN.. ALL GAGES TO THE ENGINE ALSO WENT OFF. I WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTED, SHUT DOWN AGAIN AFTER 30 SECONDS, RESTARTED AGAIN, STAYED ON. HASN'T BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE. HOWEVER, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. I CHANGED THE RELAY ON ENGINE AS A PRECAUTION.

ANY IDEA WHAT THE CAUSE WOULD BE?

WHY IS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AT STARTUP? GOES OFF ONCE STARTED.

If the check engine light is on with the engine running, It usually indicates a stored DTC int he ECU. Scanning the ECU is the normal next step.

If the engine died and all of the gauges went 'off', to me that indicates a likely loss of battery current... Given the age, a deteriorated electrical item is very possible.

The check engine light should be on with the key on and engine not running....

if your gauges are also powering down when the engine cuts out, check the fuse for the ignition system and the ignition switch, may have oxidation or a bad connection.
some years back I had a no crank no gauges issue and the cause, an oxidized fuse (ignition system fuse) and fuse tabs in the old glass style fuse box. The fuse had continuity, but there was too much oxidation for current to flow. Cleaned up the tabs, replaced all the fuses and back in business. Going to finally replace that old fuse box this fall with a modern Blue Seas 12 circuit unit.
