1994 Yamaha 150hp Pro V sterring issues

Old Man

I have a 1994 Yamaha 150 hp Pro V on a 1994 bass boat that is very difficult to steer regardless of trim attitude, speed or rpm. I have had the cable system replaced once before by a reputable service center with little or no improvement. I have removed the cable from motor and the motor moves freely. My questions are (1) can I install a hydraulic system to replace the existing cable system, (2) what would be the approximate cost, (3) what system would be recommended, (4) how many man hours would be required for installation, and finally (5) would it be better to have a marine service center to install it or can an Old Man ( with limited mechanical ability) get er done?

seastar_outboard_side.jpgYup easy job to do. Not cheap .Close to $1000 SeaStar Outboard (Side Mount) Depending on the room in the splashwell. You might need a different style, contact Teleflex for the best system. I think they sell this stuff here.I have this system on my 21 with twin 85/s Been on there since 1989 and the only problem ws a seal around the wheel shaft. Teleflex gave me the seals free and was fixed easily. Post some pics of your setup.

Thanks for the info Jerryjerry05. I'll post some pictures in a few days. Trying to figure out how to take and download pictures from this new phone. Sometimes technology outruns ones brain cells. One more qestion - when you mention splashwell - are you talking about the room just forward of transom and motor?

Thanks for info Chris but it's hard to steer in or out of gear. I'm going to install a Sea Star Pro Steering Kit and hopefully that will solve my issue. Currently redoing the hull and cap and will tackle that when I have the engine re-installed. I've owned the boat since it was new and feel like it's one of my children.

I take pics with phone and then send them to my e-mail.Then save them to my pictures. The spashwell is the area just forward of the transom. The area just to the right of the motor will tell you what kind of system you need.My hydrolic system fits right in the hole where the old cable went. You might have to cut the hole bigger?? Or go to the front mounted system?

Thanks for the insight Justin. I had read that anything over 150hp but I'll take your word. I know I'm installing it one mine. Thanks again.

My boat came with stock rack and pinion.Twin 85hp was too much for it.It lasted a year and broke while we were 20 mi. out of Wachapre,Va.We were set up and catching tuna, made the first pass and was turning and bang it went. Made for an interesting ride back.!!
