"Hi,
My cousin just contacted me this morning telling me that he needed my assistance. He has had some problems with his carbs towards the end of last year. Seem the new fuels with 10% ethanol broke down some of the gel coat, resin or glassing and some got into the carb. He was telling me how he could cruise @ 4200 RPM for a while and than the motor would cut out and at that point he would only be able to cruise around 3000-3500 RPM. Just last week he brought the motor to a local marine repair shop and they told him he needs (3) new carburetors. Well than the guy says Merc has discontinued the carbs on this motor and he will have to buy a new motor.
My questions are......
Does this sound realistic?
Can't the carbs be rebuilt rather than sourcing out a discontinued carb (new or used) or buy a new motor?
Doesn't Mercury just sell the complete carb rebuild kit?

Thank You"

Run to another shop/mechanic.W

Run to another shop/mechanic.When people tell you " It can't be fixed " they are really saying that they do not know how or cannot make money on the job. These carburetors are not that complicated and any one with a manual and patience should be able to clean / go over them.

I already told my cousin this

I already told my cousin this the second he told me.
The claim is Merc discontinued a 1994 carb or carbs....do you know if there is any thruth in that?
I can find all the replacement parts and rebuild kits on the net.

I do not think new carburetors

I do not think new carburetors is an option available or not it would likely set you back about #300.00 each. So get a manual for $40.00 and have a go at repair / clean. It is a no-brainer.

"Foggy,

These engines used a few different carbs, all very much the same, but not exactly. It depends on the serial number of the engine. Some of the carbs are no longer available. The prices range from about $375 to over $500 apiece.

I would agree that your carbs could probably be rebuilt.

Tony"
