1994 Mariner 115hp lower unit extension question

"I have a 1994 Mariner 115hp w

"I have a 1994 Mariner 115hp with the 5" insert extension kit installed above the lower unit. This makes it an extra long 25" shaft length. I want to remove the kit and return it to a 20" motor. What is the process? Once the extension kit is out are there any non-present components needed? I have heard that the driveshaft must be changed back to 20"? Any help appreciated, thanks."

"The driveshaft may have been

"The driveshaft may have been extended with a stub shaft which simply extended the original, or replaced completely.

The water-tube was most probably completely replaced.

If the original drive shaft was replaced with a 25" version, plan on opening your wallet pretty wide unless you can find a used one - a 20" shaft from Merc sells for a little over 500 bucks..."

"Mark, If it is like my '9

"Mark, If it is like my '93 Merc 135V6, the driveshaft is one piece, and you will need to find and install the shorter one, or perhaps have it cut down and resplined. The same applies to the shift shaft.

The water tube has a removeable extension, and the gearcase studs must be replaced with shorter ones.

You might see if you can trade gearcases with someone who wants an XL"

"Graham and Chris, outlook not

"Graham and Chris, outlook not sounding good. I figure the driveshaft must be a 25" otherwise it would mean there was a driveshaft extension which seems unlikely does it not? I better save the motor for a 25" transom and find something else. Thanks for the helpful advice, Mark -"

It really depends if the exten

It really depends if the extension was OEM or aftermarket - I have seen it both ways...

Perhaps a way less expensive option would be a jack plate (about 200 bucks for a really decent fixed one)...
