hey guys , this engine had a shifting problem and was stuck in forward gear , from this site i was told that my drive balls had sheared so i began to tear it down to replace them..at this point i have the lower case removed , prop , forward gear , but i cant get the prop shaft out past the gear that is pressed into the case (#17 ?) how do i get the prop shaft and reverse gear out to replace the drive balls? thanx in advance...dimitri

Which gear do you have out at this time ,reverse or forward??-Please check the details.

i appologize , the gear that i have out is the reverse gear

You likely have to remove the driveshaft in order for #17 to fall out.-#17 is not " pressed " in to anything.--------You may also have to work the shift lever to remove the parts.-----------------I have done this job and found nothing tricky or unusual.

hmmmm , im havin a hard time with this.it seems it should be simple , ive got the lower off, prop , reverse gear out , but i cant get the shaft out as it seems to be stuck to the forward gear and the two wont come out because the #17 is in the way...someone told me to put a screwdriver through the hole in the propshaft and pound it out wth a hammer , but im afraid to damage the forward and # 17 gears by doing this,.....:-mad:

There should be no need for a hammer.-----------Is the driveshaft out ???????

can you attach a slidehamer to the shaft? it sounds like the ballssssss have wedged in the shaft

yes driveshaft is out....propshaft is stuck

Have you tried turning the shift rod as suggested earlier ???

yes to no avail...gonna try the slide hammer....will post result after attempt next week ....thanx....dimitri
