Going to replace the head gaskets on a 1994 Evinrude E90TLERC 90HP that had overheated. Do I need anything other than the head gaskets?

How severe was the overheat? What was the original cause?

May want to do a compression test. Also when you pull the heads off to replace the head gaskets check for scoring on the cylinder walls. If the original cause was an impeller obviously that will need replacing as well.

Just my 2 cents.

It didn't seize up but did get very hot. Melted all the wiring on the lower half of the powerhead (upper part ok??). The jury is still out on the root cause of the overheating. We had just replaced the water pump and was very careful when we did it. We used the parts diagram as a guide. It will be disassembled and inspected.

We did find that the two hoses on the thermostat housings were not molded ones and had kinked to about 50% or so of their diameter. Replacing those for sure. Already replaced the thermostats and gaskets. The coils will also have to be replaced as they got pretty hot and are oozing epoxy.

Compression is 100/95 on the port side and 65/70 on the starboard side. Hoping that is a head gasket leaking.

Before reassembly we intend to flush the powerhead with water.
