Hi All,

Question regarding my 94 Mercury outboard 40 HP engine. We were running around the CA Delta yesterday. Upon our return trip the engine started to do something it has never done before and started to act like it was running out of gas while running. First thing first I checked and we still had roughly half a tank of gas left. It appeared that the gas bulb was functioning properly and the engine was getting gas. However, it wouldn't start. (Thankfully we had a trolling motor and used that until we could flag someone down to tow us in). I have limited knowledge of engines with my dad having more experience with them. After getting home we decided to check the spark plugs and they seemed fine. We then tried to run the motor on muffs and it fired right up... *sigh*... We aren't really sure what is going on. The engine would try to turn but wouldn't catch. We had been running in for about 20 minutes when this occurred which made it even more strange. Could it be the carbs? My dad seems to think it something electrical that got hot and stayed "open" which caused the engine not to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would like to avoid the mechanic if possible (tight budget right now).

Thanks!

Jon

Hard tot tell without diagnosis when it happened. If you had checked it for spark, you'd know which way to go.

The spark plugs looked clean after we got home. How would we check for spark on the water? What would be the options if there was/wasn't spark?

thanks

Use a spare spark plug. Inspect the stator and trigger coils for hairline cracks that expand when they get hot and stop the spark.
