"removed, water pump houseing,

"removed, water pump houseing, and noticed strong gear oil smell. the oil is black however, the drive shaft seems to move around alot.i can pick it up vertically about 1/4" and i would say it moves side to side about 1/8" or so. is this normal? i havent messed with one of these in a really long time. i know with yamaha this is un accecptable but not sure on omc thanks for the input"

"side to sd is not a prob,as it is a 2 piece shaft....up and down,i dont like...sounds like a severely worn ret pin hole /area...sd to sd is not a prob if u r referring to movement at top,down low would be bad...i would dig deeper.

"the engine would not shift properly, customer said motor mounts were bad and thats what he wanted done. i found a used midsection and transfered the powerhead. then while inspecting the gearcase i noticed the movement. i am suspecting that was the shift problem more than the motor mounts. i have located another gearcase for $250 and it will be cheaper to go that route. i will pick it up tomarrow and assemble motor tomarrow night. thanks for the input."
