Project boat nearly complete, but found another problem. Cranked motor yesterday and noticed that the water from the peehole got very hot, very quickly. I also noticed that the water stream started and stopped for a few seconds every couple of minutes. I checked the thermostat and it looked none too healthy, so i am going to replace it since i already have it out. Does this sound like a thermostat problem or more of an impeller/ water pump problem? Thanks for any help!

If it were the impeller you would not have gotten any water up to the top of the engine to get hot.
A test while you have the thermostat out is to fire it up and see the flow coming out of the head. You can run the engine for a minute with out damage.
It will not shoot out but should have a good flow.Only caution is not too do it in salt water.Yo do not want it running all over the engine.
Good luck

Your thermostat is in fact working perfectly. You loose the tel-tale when it opens due to lack of pressure. Not enough water supply from your muffs.

Haffiman, thanks again for the reply. Another question if i may? When i removed the thermostat it came out in pieces. Is this normal for this motor? i have noticed on line that some companies are selling thermostat kits that it appears you have to assemble yourself. If this motor does indeed use a thermostat that has to be assembled by the purchaser, do they not make one that comes pre-assembled?
