my engine has a while wire wit

my engine has a while wire with black stripe coming out of starboard head. is this the oil alarm wire? and if i ground it should the alarm sound just like when you ground the tan wires?

"no,..this is your quick start

"no,..this is your quick start wire...and,w/your eng not running, only your hot lite will wk,..ck both running and not by grounding tan wires, for hot horn oper."

ok thanks jwb. i think for som

ok thanks jwb. i think for some reason my engine is going into slow mode but i have no horns going off but when i ground the tan wires the horns go off

"what exactly is it doing?....

"what exactly is it doing?....
'slow' would only be kicked in NORMALLY,,when u have an overheat condition...and since your warning system appears to be working,...u may have a bad pwr pack,..if your eng drops to approx 2500,and shakes real bad...then,u either have a bad shift sw,which u can disc near the shifting mechanism,or poss a pack that is messing up....ck the spark on it and see where u r..when it is acting up."

well it runs good for a while

well it runs good for a while and then boom all of a sudden it dies and when i crank it back up it surges the rpm to 2000 at idle and it shakes really hard. though it maybe overheating so i took the thermostats out and ran it and it did it even faster like this. first time i ran it the stator burned up so i replaced that and now its got fire again but still acts up.

jwb. do you have any suggestio

jwb. do you have any suggestions on what could be wrong? i appreciate you help.

"it sounds like an air leak,th

"it sounds like an air leak, the surge has me a little puzzled/......pull the cover off the top of flywheel area, there ,is a timing wheel.....make SURE ,that it is tight.......then i would ck the idle and hs timing, but it takes a special 'ignition analyzer' box...or patience and a timing light....u will need a FACTORY service manual....but,ck that timing wheel first."

thats what gets me to. thats w

thats what gets me to. thats why i thought slow mode. but the timing is right i took it to the dealer and had all of that reset. its a very weird feeling when it starts this surging because if you put it in gear dead goes the engine. could a coil going bad cause this because when it started this i changed out powerpacks and still did the same thing. outboards are funny critters. glad there are some proffessionals out there like you to help me out. oh and the timer wheel is tight and i bought an optical sensor from the dealer and tried changing that. no luck.

no luck man i just got towed b

no luck man i just got towed back. yes sir the breather is in place. it acts really weird if it dies and cranks back up it does ok for a min and then bam it acts up again. i made a mistake and laid my hand on top of the flywheel and that lil bolt thru the timer wheel was cookin hot. wonder if the stator is overheating because of a short? because the last stator did die on me.

i called cdi and was told to g

i called cdi and was told to ground the tan wire with engine running and it goes into slow mode. this is not wat the engine does when it gets hot. i am about ready to use it as an ancor. what could cause my ignition system to have such bad misses after it get hot? i still think something is wrong with the lil timer wheel bolt gettin so hot it burns me. and could this problem be causing my crazy spark.

"cdi,is your absolute best inf

"cdi,is your absolute best info,..on help,on your problem.....if its that hot,...i guarantee,i would replce the stator,AND voltage reg/rect..."

"instead of throwing parts at

"instead of throwing parts at it,..if u have a dealer within 100 miles,take it in......make YOUR headache,..thiers...."

thats the prob i did install a

thats the prob i did install a new stator because the other one burned up but i check the regulator an it seem fine but something has to cause it to overheat but even with the regulator disconnected the stator is still getting way to hot. thanks for all the help jwb i just hate to spend a bunch of money which i already have lol and problem still exists. could the reg be causing this overheating problem or is it a seperate problem all together?

"disc,could be a prob,..all th

"disc,could be a prob,..all that juice,needs to go somewhere......,..
i strongly suspect u have a stator prob...do not run,w/the rect/reg out of the system....u better re-ck that stator for melting...where r u getting your repl parts..sierra,cdi,and orig equip mfg,is the only parts i recommend...period."

oh i had no idea it could caus

oh i had no idea it could cause problems the cdi tech had told me to try that. i checked the stator for melting and i found none but the one that burnt up was completely melted. the stator is a cdi and the powerpack is a sierra marine.i sure appreciate you taking your time to help me thru this.

"there is no way,i would run a

"there is no way,i would run a 35 amp stator not hooked up to a GOOD reg/rect....but,...he is the electronics expert,..and i trust those guys and talk to them about 1 a month...i would ,at this point,re-ck that timer wheel,..if it is allowed to spin,it could,..cause a higher idle, and ign prob's.there is an update req a wave washer to help prevent this,.MAKE SURE....that no tan wires, are near the plug wires.like, tie strapped to one etc....u can go to cdi and download this and more info that i speak of..."

timer wheel has a small crack

timer wheel has a small crack in one of the little holes for light to pass thru but it is tight and has a washer between the wheel and the bolt. and yes one of the tan wires is close to a spark plug wire but is not strapped to it. i will change that though.not only is he an expert you sound like an expert on these engines. could the regulator be bad even if it is showing the right voltages and is charging the battery as it is supposed to?

"the newer reg/rect can do som

"the newer reg/rect can do some wierd things,..but if voltage's are good, and all ck out,i doubt its the reg...there are good ck's for them on tat cdi site,as well as in a factory service kit."

well i did follow the cdi way

well i did follow the cdi way to test it and the test says it good but obviously something is not good or it wouldnt be doing what its doing. and the voltages coming from the stator seem to be ok also thats the weird thing.

jwb cdi tech says there has to

jwb cdi tech says there has to be a short in the stator causing it to overheat and this is resulting in my loss and crazy firing and my other stator being burned up. do you agree? and do you have any idea how i could find the short?

"a short,in the new stator,..d

"a short,in the new stator,..did not burn up the last one....maybe a screwed up reg/rect possibly, but doubtful...as for as testing i would just follow all the stator tests, and go from there...."

so you think the other stator

so you think the other stator is ok? even tho it stopped firing altogether? i have tried testing the stator while the engine running and when not running and also when it is acting up. and every time it seems to test ok.

"i dont know if the old one is

"i dont know if the old one is good,..have u repl the reg/rect on this beast?...the 35 amp stators do run hot..also,the condition/type and age of batt would be one thing i would consider..,since u have a new stator,i would inst a new rect/reg,regardless of how it tests....but,this wont be a factor in your ignition prob, unless the stator is getting so hot,is is screwing w/the charge coils, power coil on it."

"ok i will order a new regulat

"ok i will order a new regulator. i say it is getting that hot because the old stator after running for a while and getting hot lost all spark completely and when it cools it would start firing again until this past weekend when it quit completely. honestly i think something is getting really really hot causing the stator to quit giving fire to the powerpack, this is just my opinion because of what i have seen and checked but now with the new stator instead of loosing fire it just gets to where its missing on a few cylinders is the best way to describe it. i have spent a lot of money so far and am running out very quickly so i have to watch what i replace from here on out. thank you so much for using your free time to help me with my problem you have no idea how much some people appreciate what you are doing."

"well thank you.......,take a

"well thank you.......,take a look,at the magnets iside that flywheel, that all are solid glued, none are missing,at that they are of equal spacing...."

ok i will take it off later th

ok i will take it off later this afternoon and check i never thought about that. it is just so aggravating even getting to the flywheel. how many magnets should i have? and how far should the spacing be?

"i believe,there are 6...but o

"i believe, there are 6...but one missing would be obvious...ck the gap on the remaining ones ,but i think on the 150/175 it is 5/16...not sure tho."
