I recetly performed a car rebuild on my 1993 15hp Evinrude and now I am expereincing a loud "horn" like noise at 1000 rpm and above. I did remove the pull starter assembly during the rebuild but I have looked extensively at this assembly and can't seem to find a rubbing points. Any ideas?

"pull cvr off,and see where horn noise,...is coming from....it should not have a horn on it..."

Can I assume the CVR is the st

Can I assume the CVR is the starter oull assebly? I assume I should do this with the engine running? Your help is appreciated!

""cvr" = JWB's sho

""cvr" = JWB's shorthand for "motor cover" ... pull the cover off the motor and see if you can determine where the noise is coming from (while it's running!).

I've recently pulled the recoil starter off my 1996 9.9 4-stroke Evinrude, and don't recall anything that could be dragging, causing your "horn" noise ... unless it's the "lock out" to prevent starting in gear."

"Thanks John. I did pull the m

"Thanks John. I did pull the motor cover off during operation and could not pinpoint the noise. I pulled the pull starter assembly off last night and took apart the recoil to see if I saw anything rubbing. Not an easy job to put it back together but I managed with a little help. The lockout does show some where but I don't belive it was enough to cause that noise. I also noticed a few of the lock tabs were broken but don't suspect that could be casuing the issue. Unless you have any other advice, I plant to start up the motor and pull off the pull start assembly afterwards to see if I can isolate the problem. Your help is appreciated!"

Just be very careful ... pulli

Just be very careful ... pulling the recoil starter off while the motor is running is a hazardous thing to attempt!

Vacuum leak whistle from gaske

Vacuum leak whistle from gasket???? Squirt WD 40 around carb/manifold gasket while running to check for leaks

Vacuum leak certainly a possib

Vacuum leak certainly a possibility ... especially not being able to hear what the "horn" noise sounds like!

Tom ... did you install a new gasket between the carb and the intake? Did you properly tighten the carb mounting nuts when you re-installed?

Does the "horn" noise change pitch when you rev the engine?

"I did change all gaskets duri

"I did change all gaskets during the rebuild. I doubt very its a vacuum leak given the engine shutters fairly violently once the noise begins. It actually shakes the RIB I have. The noise is consitant above 1000rpm but I haven't taken it too much above that in fear of damaging something. I should note that does sounds more than a horn but that is what my 8 year old thought it was first. For lack of a better terminology, it is a squelling horn sound. This website is awesome!"

"If the diagram I'm lookin

"If the diagram I'm looking at for your motor is correct, it looks like there is a notch in the flywheel that you could use to start the motor with a hand-wound rope ... if so, I'd recommend removing the recoil start assembly first ... then start the motor with a pull rope!"

"I went back out the water aft

"I went back out the water after pulling apart the pull start assembly and the squilling noise hasn't gone away but it it is not as loud and disappears during higher RPM. When I took the starter assembly apart, I was told there are bearing in the assembly that could get dirty and cause this. I did not see any bearings. Does anyone know if this assembly has any type of bearings?"

"not in the manual pull,starte

"not in the manual pull,starter...do u have elect start?...if so,maybe the bendix,is not releasing.."

"have u checked the oil,in low

"have u checked the oil,in lower unit?...sounds can resonate thru dr shaft...if dry...if u see no other problems,...i would pull the plugs, and see if it spins over easy by manual spinning flywheel...look up under, and around, for anything, that could be rubbing bottom of flywheel,..nothing there, pull the flywheel,u prob have a loose coil, contacting flywheel..."

It is a manual start. What is

It is a manual start. What is the bendix? I also checked lower unit oil and everything looks good. Motor does spin easily with plug pulled. Will check flywheel next.
