"Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any help. I have recently aquired a 1993 70 hp evinrude motor and installed it on my 16ft skiff. From day one, it was fowling the middle plug. I have changed the power pack due to deteriorated wiring, the timer base because it had some cracks in the bottom, and inspected the flywheel at that time. I have been through the carbs several times, even swapped the top and middle around along with plugs, wires and coils. Still, it fowls the middle plug. The compression is about 110 on every cylinder. I've checked it numerous times. It seems to miss from idle to about 3/4 throttle, then it clears up. I've checked the timing it's at 19* BTC and at the same time, I checked to see if that cylinder was getting fire at the time it was missing. The timing light blinks when there is an apparent miss. My guess is too much fuel, but how? I've swapped carbs around and still middle cylinder fowls plug. Could I need to decarbonize it? I'm sure it needs it, but could that cause my problem? I'm lost at this point? Oh and one more thing, the temp sensor on the top cylinder isn't connected? Don't know if that's important or not. I've heard about the fast start function and all. I think this motor is supposed to have it. Does it use that sensor? Please help. Thanks. Nick"

"have u chged....the plugs?....if so,i would be inclined to ck reed valve on #2...conn all sensors.but thats not your prob."

I did some digging. Are reed valves the same as leaf valves in this motor? How do they work? What are they for?

"You need to understand the theory and functional operation fundamentals of a two cycle engine. It is complicated to go into here, but very basically, the reeds allow one way flow of a fuel-air charge into the engine. The direction of travel is from the carbs to the crankcase. Note I said crankcase, not cylinder.
That is one very major difference in a two cycle motor. Google the two cycle engine theory of operation and you will see a bit clearer."

Now what I don't understand is how can a bad reed valve foul a plug? It seems like it would just push the gas charge back out the carb.

I doubt a bad reed will fowl the plugs.
A flooding carb or perhaps un-synced carbs might do it.
