motor is stuck in forward gear

motor is stuck in forward gear. nothing appears broken with controls. motor still starts in gear? controls still move shaft rod up and down under carbs . any help besides going into lowwer unit? thanks

"Personally I'd drop the lower unit for inspection. First thing I'd do is to shift manually directly at the shift rod. If it's still connected and the problem continues to exist during a bench test, going into the lower unit would appear to be unadvoidable."

thanks joe guess i was just hoping for easy answer will pull lower unit this weekend. just thought might be some kind of switch that might be keeping it stuck?thought if something was disconnected in lower unit i would hear it while running in gear.i run boat in about 15 miles with no problem?

If the motor starts in gear it

If the motor starts in gear it is a problem inside the remote conrol unit.There is a set of plastic gears inside which can break off teeth and leave the motor stuck in forward gear.When the lever is returned back to the nuetral posisition the motor is still in gear but the nuetral switch inside the control unit thinks that the motor is back in nuetral again so it will start..
Pull apart the conrol unit first.
You could also remove the shifting cable from the engine and try to shift in and out of gear buy hand while turning the prop at the same time.
If that works ok it is not a problem with the gear box.
