new to forum. i have come here many times to get info on various outboard problems...you guys are great! i cant find out any info on this 1993 2 hp johnson i have. i have cleaned the carb (ultrasonic) and replaced the plug. it starts easy but i am having the following problems. in the front there is a throttle lever and a choke lever that controls the choke plate. the motor will only idle down with the choke plate closed. if you open the the choke plate and let in the full amount of air the motor dies. i have tried ever setting on the slow speed screw with no success. the motor will idle with the plate closed but when you try to go full throttle it bogs down...until you open the choke plate and let in full air...is this the way the motor opperates? any info on this motor would be great!...thanks
 
That is a generic motor made " offshore " and marketed by Johnson / Evinrude / Mercury and others as well.----------Having to close the choke clearly points at problems in the carburetor.---I would revisit the work you did in cleaning it.
 
You are right about it being "offshore" it is not the old school quality you would expect from omc. The carb is spotless though. I saw one other thread for this motor posted in 2003. The motor had the same issue. I also saw a video on youtube...same thing, choke plate closed when idleing. I can't find any manual on this motor. I am begining to think this is the way the motor functions. The "choke" plate might function as more than a choke because the carb does not have any butterflys. Any insight is appreciated.
 
The choke plate is for choke only !!-----The round thingy takes the place of a throttle butterfly plate.------I would say that there is something wrong in the carburetor.
 
there is an "o" ring missing from where the carb mounts to the engine. i dont know about a gasket on the top, i have had it apart and there isnt one there. also, the diagram doesnt show a gasket there. and yes the 2hp restictor plate is in place. i will get the "o" ring and double check the top part of the carb. i have learned through "racerone" that these "offshore" motors were sold by just about everyone. i did a little research on-line and found the same carb used by mercury, omc, mariner, yamaha, suzuki, etc for the smaller hp's. i will get back to you guys tomorrow...thanks for everything so far.
 
It looks like I have it fixed. It was a simple problem. Part #8 on the carb diagram has 3 settings on it to let the throttle body drop down as low as possible to restrict air flow. It was set at number two setting and just needed to be moved down to slot #1...lowest setting possible. The difference between the settings is literally about 1mm and it made all the difference. It idles down to a crawl. Thanks for everything guys!
