1993 175 driveshaft

With a 2 piece driveshaft it is normal.---------When the end is installed in the crankshaft there will be no movement.

Not hard to believe if you understand how this is put together !!!!---------------There is no side to side movement in any bearings on that set-up !!!

On my exploded view of the parts of the lower unit, the only bearing it shows for the driveshaft is the bearing housing that sits just below the water pump. With the water pump on, the shaft doesn't move at all (except up and down). Without the cover of the water pump, the shaft will move side to side. I'm concerned that running under power, there will be enough torque to move that shaft even with the cover on it. If the bearings need to be replaced, how would I know?

??????---------You need to look at this again.------Perhaps take the upper bearing housing out to see first hand how this works.--------Working on your motor for the first time ?--------And you are worrying for no reason at all too !!!!!

First time working on this engine, (my kids think now that I'm retired I need something to keep me busy, so they bought a 25 year old boat). I was a mechanical contractor, worked on all kinds of different things. I just find it hard to believe that the impeller and pump cover will keep the shaft from shaking under power. Anything I've ever worked on in the past that had any kind of bearing assembly never had any kind of lateral movement.

You are totally confused by this assembly !!!!!------Do you understand that it is a 2 piece driveshaft ???------There is nothing wrong with the design !!!--------------Look at it all very carefully mate.--------The impeller and pump housing do nothing when the upper end of the driveshaft is supported be a massive bearing on the crankshaft !!
